We've all seen them at the ballpark. The player comes to the plate to bat or just strolls in from the pen and you see a picture of them with a neat background of the ball park and we think nothing of it. In reality that body or head shot was taken at the team's photo shoot day with a white screen behind them. Some use a green screen. The reason they do this is simple. They can then superimpose the player's image onto any background to display on the big screen at the ballpark. It's really simple to do if it's green screen. It's a bit tougher to do if it's a white screen, because sometimes the outer edges of their uni's or face have white in it. This "fakes" out the "magic wand" auto selector and forces you to have to do some additional cut/paste.
For years the Mets even dropped the players into Baseball cards with every one having the same pose and the same stadium back drop. Here are some samples of what I did with PS to take the Brewers 2011 photo day shots with white screen and next to them an updated look with Miller field in the background. By tonight I will show you how these full shots will become part of the updated 2011 baseball card set for Milwaukee. Take a look at some of my samples below:
Mitch Stetter with the white screen (L) and Mitch now in Miller Field (R)
Mark DiFelice white screen (L) and Mark now standing in Miller Field (R)
It's now Eric Farris' turn to go from the white screen (L) to a batting pose in Miller Field (L)
Logan Schaffer's transformation took an extra step thanks to the glare near his face. I had to manually select parts of his face and paste them into the updated photo, because the magic selector thought they were part of the white screen. This is why green screen's work so much better.
Here are just 4 of the 11 that I had to modify. Cards should be ready some time today for manager Joe Bukal, who is once again piloting the Brew Crew.
So I ask you...Do they look real ? If you said no, is it because you caught it on first glance or did you look for giveaway details after you saw the original ?
